改编自漫画家和月伸宏的人气漫画【浪客剑心】真人版电影终于登上银幕了。漫画从1994年起至1999年期间于周刊少年JUMP连载，共发行28卷单行本，漫画累积销售量超过了5700万部，不仅在日本，在海外也有着很高人气，被翻译成23国语言，曾被拍成电视动画及剧场版。今次加入电脑特技效果，以真人电影版跟观众在大银幕见面。电影在日本本土上映8天，便突破100万人次入场观赏记录，票房突破12亿日圆！
1868年，幕府政权被推翻后，名重一时的刽子手拔刀斋立下不杀人的誓言，他隐姓埋名改名绯村剑心(佐藤健饰)，配带逆刃刀开展了其浪人的生涯。十年后他在东京遇上神谷道场管理人神谷薰(武井咲饰)并寄居其下，当时出现了「刽子手拔刀斋」杀人事件，他从武田观柳(香川照之饰)手上救出被迫生产鸦片的高荷惠(苍井优饰)，并解开了杀人事件的真相，最后他与刽子手鹈堂刃卫(吉川晃司饰)决一死战，究竟剑心能否守住不杀人誓言而保护所爱呢?
